Once you have created a splendid roadmap, who do you share it with? In how much detail? Does it ever leave the building?
My friend Samuel Clemens, former Chief Product Officer at InsightSquared (and today Partner at Accomplice VC), says, “The roadmap is never ever allowed outside the building. However staff can use the roadmap to respond to a customer that, ‘yes, something is on our short-term roadmap; or: our PMs are looking for more input on that so would you mind doing a call with one of them?’”
It can be scary to share your roadmap outside your organization, but I would argue the risks are far outweighed by the benefits in two-way communication with your customers. What do you think? Discuss.
I go deep into "Presenting and Sharing Your Roadmap," in Chapter 9 of my book, Product Roadmaps Relaunched.
