Once upon a time, I joined a startup whose execs were bursting with good ideas. I counted 73 initiatives in progress or slated for work soon. The first thing I did was convince the exec team that we needed to focus on the most important things first. I got everybody aligned on a much shorter list inside of my first month. This was so shocking to a colleague that he declared it was “magic.” It wasn’t magic, of course, it was just good practice.
