In a startup, the founder is often the driver of product/marketing/sales/vision/kitchen sink. As the organization scales, it may hire a product person. Being the first product hire is tough, because of all the context locked the founder's head.

The growing organization needs to know that context. Sit down often with the founder and ask a lot of questions. Write a draft vision, strategy, goals, and priorities. Ask the founder if you got it right. Tweak it until you do. The whole company will thank you.
