Say you have a belligerent stakeholder. (How could that be?!) Some tips we’ve amassed over the years:

1. Start with agreement. That is, summarize where you do agree, to set the stage for further discussion. Ask them to confirm your understanding.
2. Then, ask for permission to open up discussion. Say something like, “Are you open to another point of view?” Wait respectfully for them to answer. By giving you permission, they create in themselves a social obligation to listen and consider your position sympathetically.
