ONE THING on Product Leadership

How do you learn to be a leader? Product is the sort of leadership role that can pull the right team together and get them moving in the right direction. But how do you get those skills? Is it mentorship? Making tons of mistakes? Reading brilliant books? A Product Culture Manifesto? Or just innate ability?

I learned cross-functional leadership from my first boss in Product, John Wang, who went on to be CMO of HTC. I watched as he masterfully consulted with the smartest people around him, made their ideas his and his ideas theirs. He made strategic alignment look easy but he let me see the work he put into it.

How did you learn leadership? I’d like to learn from your experience. Tell me a story.
